Where Wahlstedt is, if you are coming from further away

Two things shape Wahlstedt and neither of them is old. On the southwest side of the town, where the works and the warehouses stand today, there was once a Marinearsenal, a naval arsenal, and a marked trail with twelve boards still runs across that ground. On the north side there is the Marinesiedlung, a housing estate whose street names say where its first residents came from. Between the two lies a compact centre with one market square, one theatre and one street where almost all the doctors have their rooms.

Wahlstedt is run from two places. It has its own Rathaus, the town hall, for its own affairs, and for everything larger it falls under the Kreis Segeberg, the rural district that covers this corner of the state. The Kreis is worth knowing about as a passenger, because Wahlstedt lies outside the area in which the Neumünster town tariff is compulsory, and that is what lets us agree a price with you in advance. There is more on that at the bottom of this page. The district town is Bad Segeberg, a few minutes to the east, and it is where most of what Wahlstedt does not have itself is found, the hospitals above all.

From Neumünster, where our office and our cars are, it is about 25 kilometres to the southeast, roughly 15 miles. Hamburg is away to the south and Kiel to the north, each of them close to an hour by road, which puts Wahlstedt nearer the middle of Schleswig-Holstein, the state at the top of Germany that ends at the Danish border, than to either city. Almost everybody who travels here by public transport passes through Neumünster first, because the railway between Hamburg and Kiel runs through it and so do the main roads in from the west.

People who come to Wahlstedt from outside rarely come as tourists. They come for a shift at one of the works on the old naval arsenal ground, for an appointment at the hospitals in Bad Segeberg, for a course of treatment at the psychiatric hospital in Rickling, or for an evening at the Kleine Theater on the Markt, which is the market square in the middle of the town. In summer the open air stage at the Kalkberg in Bad Segeberg fills a lot of beds in the area, Wahlstedt included.

There is no airport and no station of any size in Wahlstedt itself. Hamburg Airport is the nearest large one and we drive there from Wahlstedt as well, at a price agreed beforehand like every other route on this site. If you are arriving in Germany and Wahlstedt is your final address, it is usually the last stretch, the one after the flight and after the train, that is hardest to arrange from abroad. That is the stretch we do.

The train reaches Wahlstedt, but not the part of it you want

Wahlstedt has its own stop on the railway from Neumünster to Bad Oldesloe. The RB82, run by the Nordbahn, goes through without a change and the timetable allows around 17 minutes for the run from Neumünster. If you are staying near that stop, the train is the sensible way to travel and we are not going to talk anybody out of it. How often it runs, and when the last one goes back in the evening, is a matter for the Nordbahn timetable and it changes every time the timetable changes, so the times on this page are a snapshot of the year that runs until December 2026.

The catch is where the stop is. In German it is a Haltepunkt rather than a Bahnhof, which means a platform and a shelter rather than a station building with staff behind a counter, and this one sits in the northeast of the town beside the industrial estate on the Kieler Straße. It is not on the Markt. Anyone heading for the Waldstraße, for the Rathaus, for the Marinesiedlung or out to Tütenmoor still has a decent walk once the train has gone. With a suitcase, with a walking frame, or after an appointment at one of the practices on the Waldstraße, that is not a walk you do without thinking about it, and on a wet evening in January it is less inviting still.

The same sum works in the other direction. If you have to get from Wahlstedt to the Friedrich-Ebert-Krankenhaus in Neumünster, to an outpatient clinic with a time printed on the letter or to an early shift, what counts is not the running time of the train. What counts is the walk from your front door to the platform on the Kieler Straße, and then the second walk from the station in Neumünster to wherever you actually have to be. In a taxi both of those walks disappear. We pick you up at your door and stop at the door you are going to, whether that is the Ostlandstraße, the Rudolf-Gußmann-Platz or a house on the Hasselkamp.

One thing about German addresses is worth knowing before you book. Almost everything here is a street name plus a house number, and in a town the size of Wahlstedt the street name alone is usually enough for a driver who knows the place. Give us the street, the number and the name on the bell and we will find you. If you are being collected from a works gate, a hospital wing or a school rather than from a house, say which entrance, because the larger sites here have more than one and they can be several minutes apart on foot.

The parts of Wahlstedt we drive to

Strictly speaking Wahlstedt has no Ortsteile, the officially named parts that most German towns are divided into. The place is one continuous built up area, and apart from the centre the registers list only the group of houses at Waldesruh, the estates Hülsenberg and Wahlstedt and the forester's house at Buchholz as separate named places. People here talk in quarters anyway, and that is what we go by when we work out where to come.

In the middle you have the Markt with the Rathaus at number 3, the pedestrian street and the Kleine Theater on the Rudolf-Gußmann-Platz. The Waldstraße is the health street of the town. On it are the Armbrust group practice, the women's practice and the children's doctor in the building at number 17, a dental practice, several physiotherapists, the Stadt-Apotheke and the Wald-Apotheke, which are the two chemists, and the Paul-Gerhardt-Haus together with the Haus Wahlstedt for people living with dementia. The town's Medizinisches Versorgungszentrum, a centre where several practices share one roof, has two addresses, one in the Ostlandstraße and one in the Hans-Dall-Straße.

North of that lies the Alte Dorf, the old village, around the Dorfstraße. Then there is the Marinesiedlung, the naval housing estate, where the street names still say where the first residents came from, so Ostlandstraße, Pommernweg, Danziger Weg and Mecklenburger Weg. Beyond those are the housing areas Hasselkamp, Im Holt, Tütenmoor, Kronsheide, Grevekoppel, Bergkoppel and the Alte Landstraße. Waldesruh stands on its own to the west, just outside the town.

In the southwest is the Gewerbegebiet, the industrial estate, laid out on the ground of the former Marinearsenal, the naval arsenal that once stood here. Grundfos is on the Willy-Pelz-Straße, the pelzGROUP next door, and Ardagh Glass on the Dr.-Hermann-Lindrath-Straße. A marked history trail with twelve information boards runs across the same ground and tells the arsenal story. We also drive to the Aqua Fun swimming pool on the Scharnhorststraße, to the Kleine Arche with its old breeds of farm animals, to the tennis centre on the Nordlandstraße, to the primary school and the Poul-Due-Jensen-Schule, to the rooms of the Volkshochschule, the adult education centre, on the Waldstraße, and to the airfield north of the town. Distances inside Wahlstedt are short, and from the Markt to the last house at Tütenmoor takes a couple of minutes. Give us the street and we stop in front of the door.

The road from Neumünster to Wahlstedt

It is around 25 kilometres and the car normally takes 25 to 30 minutes. We leave Neumünster on the Boostedter Straße, run a good 14 kilometres along the B205 towards Bad Segeberg, and turn off before the district town onto the county road that begins as the Neumünsteraner Straße and continues as the Fehrenböteler Straße. The last stretch comes into the town along the Neumünsterstraße and ends, depending on where you are going, at the Markt, in the Waldstraße or in one of the housing areas.

When there are roadworks on the country road, or the address is on the eastern side of the town, we stay on the B205 as far as the A21 and come off at the Wahlstedt junction. The A21 passes close by to the east, so the run from the slip road into the streets is short. Whether the driver takes the county road or the motorway is his call on the day, and it makes no difference to the price you were quoted.

The route runs along the northern edge of the Segeberger Forst, a large stretch of woodland that carries the same name as the district. This is a country road and not a motorway. At harvest time you can spend a few kilometres behind a tractor, and at dusk there are deer standing at the edge of the wood. Our drivers allow for that when they promise a pick up time for Wahlstedt, and they take the wooded stretch more slowly when it is wet. From the Friedrich-Ebert-Krankenhaus in Neumünster it is 24 kilometres, and from the Holstenhallen, the exhibition halls on the northern side of Neumünster, just under 27.

When we drive to Wahlstedt most often

The strongest reason in the evening is the Kleine Theater on the Markt. The building was a cinema until the nineteen seventies, when it was rebuilt as a theatre with a good 400 seats, a middle stage and an orchestra pit. Since 1975 the programme has been put together by the Kulturring, a volunteer association, and in January 2025 the house reopened after a long renovation. Performances usually start at eight in the evening and the audience does not only come from the town, but from Neumünster, Kiel, Lübeck and Hamburg. Getting home afterwards is easier when the return trip is already arranged.

In summer the Kalkberg comes into it. The name means chalk hill, and the open air stage there, on the western edge of Bad Segeberg, is a good eight kilometres from Wahlstedt. People who have seats for a performance often sleep in Wahlstedt or drive in through the town.

On working days we mostly drive to appointments and to work. In the morning that means the shifts at Grundfos and at the other firms on the industrial estate. On Thursdays between eight and one it means the Wochenmarkt, the weekly open air market with stalls on the Markt, which is where a lot of older people in the town do their shopping. And it means the opening hours of the Rathaus, which closes on Fridays and therefore fits all of its counter business into four mornings and one Thursday afternoon. If you have something to settle there and cannot drive yourself, the appointment has to sit inside that window. The most frequent journeys of all, though, are the ones to doctors and hospitals, and almost all of those go out of Wahlstedt rather than into it.

Doctors and hospitals: what Wahlstedt has and what it does not

The list of doctors and therapists that the town keeps itself covers general practice, surgery, gynaecology, paediatrics and dentistry, along with physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and naturopathy. Most of those addresses are on the Waldstraße or a few steps away from it, with the Medizinisches Versorgungszentrum in the Ostlandstraße and in the Hans-Dall-Straße on top of that. If you need an eye doctor, a dermatologist, an orthopaedic surgeon or an X ray practice, you will not find one on that list and you have to leave the town for it. Those appointments make up a large part of our Wahlstedt work.

The nearest hospitals are in Bad Segeberg, and which of the three sites is printed on your appointment letter makes a real difference. The Krankenhausstraße site holds internal medicine, surgery, joint replacement, urology, gynaecology and the maternity unit, and from the Markt in Wahlstedt it is just under eight kilometres. Am Kurpark is where the heart centre and the clinic for psychosomatic medicine are, about the same distance again. The Hamdorfer Weg, on the northern edge of Bad Segeberg, has the acute neurology department, the clinic for Parkinson's disease and movement disorders and the neurological early rehabilitation unit, and that one is a further two kilometres or so. Tell us the street and we stop at the right building.

In the other direction lies Rickling, a good six kilometres away and under ten minutes. The psychiatric hospital on the Daldorfer Straße, with its Institutsambulanz, which is the hospital's own outpatient clinic, brings the kind of appointment that repeats on the same weekday for months. To the Friedrich-Ebert-Krankenhaus in Neumünster it is around 24 kilometres, and that hospital has a dialysis department and a clinic for haematology, oncology and nephrology among other things. Those are treatments in series too, often several times a week over a long stretch.

If the health insurer is paying for a journey like that, it does not run on the fixed price on this page. It runs as a Krankenfahrt, a medical journey ordered on a form that your doctor signs, and the insurer settles it with us directly. What is needed for that is set out on our page about Krankenfahrten. Without the form the journey is simply the price we agree with you beforehand. If we are collecting you from the Paul-Gerhardt-Haus or the Haus Wahlstedt on the Waldstraße, say when you book whether a walking frame is coming along and whether the driver should walk with you as far as the reception desk.

Evenings, nights and weekends: what still runs in Wahlstedt

The minutes of the RB82 are easy to remember. At Wahlstedt it leaves towards Neumünster at nine minutes past the hour and towards Bad Segeberg and Bad Oldesloe at fifty five minutes past, once an hour, every day of the week. In the evening that carries on past eleven, and after that the timetable has a few single trains running after midnight. On Saturday the first train towards Neumünster goes shortly after six in the morning, on Sunday not until after seven. That is the state of the annual timetable that runs to December 2026, so treat it as a snapshot rather than a promise.

Inside the town it is the bus. Line 7900 comes over from Bad Segeberg by way of Fahrenkrug and stops at the Alte Landstraße, Am Röthberg, in the Rendsburger Straße, An der Eiche, at the Marinesiedlung, in the Skandinavienstraße, in the Kronsheider Straße and in the Dr.-Lindrath-Straße, as well as at Grundfos. On working days and Saturdays it runs roughly once an hour, and the last bus back towards Bad Segeberg leaves the Dr.-Lindrath-Straße just after half past ten at night. On Sundays six journeys are left, the first in the late morning and the last in the early evening, with a gap of three hours over the middle of the day. Line 7930 to Rickling and Trappenkamp and line 7920 through Heidmühlen to Boostedt are built around the school day and are of little use outside it.

Two things follow from that. There is no bus in the timetable book that runs from Wahlstedt straight to Neumünster, so for that direction it is the train. And the town buses stop in the late evening, while the railway stop sits out in the northeast beside the industrial estate. Anyone getting off there close to midnight has the rest of the way on foot.

That is why so many of our Wahlstedt journeys sit at the edges of the timetable. If you set off from Hamburg, Kiel or Lübeck in the evening and only reach Neumünster after the last connection has gone, you ring us and we do the last 25 kilometres to your front door. If you have an early shift on a Sunday, or an early train to catch, it is better to order the car the night before, because nothing runs here before seven on that day. And when the Nordbahn puts buses on instead of trains for engineering work, as it did in the late summer of 2026 between the end of August and the end of September, the journey by way of Rickling becomes a good deal longer. None of that changes the price we agreed with you.

Our office in Neumünster is staffed around the clock, Sundays and public holidays included. German public holidays catch visitors out more often than Sundays do, because the shops stay shut and public transport thins out on those days as well, and there are several of them in the spring. A car ordered the evening before is worth more than it looks on a day like that.

A fixed price instead of the Taxameter

The Pflichtfahrgebiet of Neumünster, the compulsory service area laid down by the town, covers the town itself and journeys to and from Tasdorf, Bönebüttel, Padenstedt, Ehndorf, Wasbek, Großharrie, Rendswühren and Schillsdorf. Wahlstedt belongs to the Kreis Segeberg and is not on that list. The official tariff of the town of Neumünster therefore does not apply to this journey, and we are allowed to agree a price with you in advance instead.

That is why the price for the run to Wahlstedt is already on this page, and why it appears again in the booking form before you confirm anything. It stays the same if roadworks on the B205 send us round by the A21, and it stays the same if we spend part of the way behind a farm vehicle on the county road. There are two prices for this route, one for a normal car and one for the Großraumtaxi, the large taxi that seats up to eight.

Inside Neumünster it works the other way round. There the sealed Taxameter, the taximeter fitted in the car, runs on the official town tariff and we are not permitted to agree anything else. The line where the difference falls is the boundary of the compulsory service area, not the town boundary of Wahlstedt, which is a distinction that surprises people who assume the meter switches off at the last house in Neumünster.

In practice it means you see the price before you travel and pay that price at the end. You can pay the driver in cash or by card in the car. If you need a receipt for an employer, a hospital or an insurer, say so at the start of the journey rather than at the end, so the driver can make it out to the right name while you are still sitting in the car.
