Children in the taxi: child seats, baby carriers and what the law says

What the law says about taxis, in short
As a rule, children in a car belong in a seat that matches their age and height. For taxis, German road traffic law makes an exception: children may ride in the back of a taxi even when no suitable seat happens to be on board.
That exception is meant as a fallback, not a recommendation. A child is always safest in a proper child seat, buckled in correctly. So for any journey you can plan ahead, that is what we recommend, and there are two easy ways to arrange it.
Your own seat is always the best choice
Your own baby carrier or child seat is guaranteed to fit your child, and your child knows it. Simply bring it along; the driver will help you fit it and stow it back in the boot when you arrive.
There is no charge for this. A child seat counts as normal luggage with us and travels free, and so does the folded pushchair next to it.
A seat from us: just mention it when you book
No seat to hand, or you would rather not carry one around? Write your child's age in the "Note for the driver" field and the driver will bring a suitable seat along. Please book at least an hour ahead, so the right seat ends up in the right car.

Baby carrier, child seat or booster: which fits when
As a rule of thumb: babies travel in a rear-facing baby carrier, toddlers in a child seat with its own harness, and school-age children on a booster seat until the normal belt fits properly. If you are not sure, just tell us your child's age and rough height.
If several children are travelling, let us know. We will plan the seats and, if needed, a larger car straight away, so nobody ends up squeezed in the back.
To the airport or on a big trip with the whole family
For the family holiday: from five people you need a large taxi, and with two child seats plus suitcases it often makes sense for four as well. Simply set the number of passengers in the booking form and list the children in the notes field.
For fixed-price journeys outside Neumünster, for instance to Hamburg Airport, you see the price before you book, and child seats do not change it. Within Neumünster the taximeter charges the official city tariff, as always.
Frequently asked questions
May my child ride in a taxi without a child seat?
In the back seat, yes: German road traffic law makes an exception for taxis. A proper seat is always safer though. Tell us your child's age when you book and the driver will bring a seat along.
Does a child seat cost extra?
No. Whether you bring your own seat or the driver brings one along, the fare stays the same.
Can I bring my own baby carrier or Maxi-Cosi?
Yes, that is actually the best solution, because that seat is certain to fit your child. The driver helps you fit it and stows it back in the boot after the ride.
How do I order a child seat with my booking?
Write the child's age in the "Note for the driver" field when you book, or mention it on the phone on 04321 22200. Please book at least an hour ahead so the right seat is in the car.
Will the pushchair fit in the taxi?
A folded pushchair fits in the boot of a saloon car, along with a bag. For a twin pushchair or lots of extra luggage you are better off with a large taxi, which you select simply via the passenger count in the form.
