Night rate and public holidays: when which rate applies

The difference between the day and night rate is exactly one euro on the base fare, nothing more. Even so, few things get explained wrongly as often. Here is when which rate applies, with all statutory public holidays in Schleswig-Holstein.

The night tariff applies Monday to Saturday from 22:00 to 6:00 and all day on Sundays and public holidays. Saturday daytime is the day tariff. Normal luggage is always included.

The hours at a glance

The day rate applies Monday to Saturday from 6 am to 10 pm, with a base fare of €4.60. The night rate applies Monday to Saturday from 10 pm to 6 am, and around the clock on Sundays and public holidays, with a base fare of €5.60.

Everything else stays the same, whatever the hour. The price per kilometre is €2.30 for the first six kilometres and €1.90 after that, day and night. Waiting time always costs €36 per hour, from the first minute.

So it is not worth postponing a ride because of the rate. Get in at 9.55 pm instead of 10.05 pm and you save exactly one euro.

Saturday is not a public holiday

The most common misconception about the tariff: that the night rate applies all day on Saturdays. It does not. Saturday from 6 am to 10 pm is perfectly normal day rate with a €4.60 base fare.

Only from 10 pm does Saturday turn into night, just like any other weekday. The ride to the shops on Saturday morning or to a café in the afternoon costs exactly the same as on a Tuesday.

Sunday is different. For tariff purposes it counts entirely as night, from the first moment to the last. Ride at Sunday lunchtime and you pay the €5.60 base fare.

These public holidays apply in Schleswig-Holstein

On statutory public holidays the night rate applies all day, exactly as on Sundays. What counts are the public holidays of the state of Schleswig-Holstein, not those of other federal states.

Easter Sunday and Whit Sunday fall on a Sunday anyway, so the holiday changes nothing there. You notice the rule on the weekday holidays, such as 1 May or Ascension Day.

  • New Year's Day (1 January)
  • Good Friday
  • Easter Monday
  • Labour Day (1 May)
  • Ascension Day
  • Whit Monday
  • German Unity Day (3 October)
  • Reformation Day (31 October)
  • Christmas Day and Boxing Day (25 and 26 December)

Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve: not public holidays

24 and 31 December are not statutory public holidays. During the day the normal day rate applies, unless the date happens to fall on a Sunday. From 10 pm the night rate applies, just like on any other day.

There is no special New Year's Eve surcharge in Neumünster. The ride home at half past midnight on New Year's night costs the normal night base fare of €5.60 plus the kilometres driven, because 1 January is a public holiday.

On New Year's Eve a great many people are out at the same time. Best book your ride home in advance, then the car is ready at the agreed time.

What the night rate means in numbers

A three kilometre ride costs around €11.50 during the day: a €4.60 base fare plus three times €2.30. At night it is around €12.50. The difference is always exactly one euro, however long the ride.

On fixed-price routes outside Neumünster, say to Hamburg Airport or to Kiel, there is no night surcharge at all. The price is fixed before you book and applies at four in the morning just as it does at four in the afternoon. You will find all routes on the fixed prices page.
