Taxi on prescription: how billing with your health insurer works
Whether a health insurer pays for a taxi journey is decided by the insurer, not the taxi company. What we can do: explain the route there clearly, give you the right receipts and make the billing as easy as possible. That is exactly what this page is for.

The official tariff of the city of Neumünster
Valid since 1 May 2025, fare ordinance of 10 April 2025. Within the compulsory service area the taximeter charges exactly these rates.

The night tariff applies Monday to Saturday from 22:00 to 6:00 and all day on Sundays and public holidays. Saturday daytime is the day tariff. Normal luggage is always included.
First the prescription, then the journey
The basis of every patient journey at the insurer's expense is a prescription for patient transport, the Muster 4 form. Your doctor issues it if, for medical reasons, you cannot get to treatment on your own. Ideally it is in place before the first journey.
Without a prescription, the ride is a perfectly normal taxi journey at your own expense. That can be completely fine; you should just know it beforehand and not first discover it looking at the receipt.
Approval: often mandatory for outpatient treatment
Journeys to outpatient treatment must in many cases be approved by the health insurer in advance. The prescription alone is not enough then: it goes to the insurer first, and only with their confirmation is the coverage settled.
Exactly how that works differs from insurer to insurer and from case to case. So ask your insurer or the practice before the first journey; both know the way. We cannot take that decision and therefore promise nothing on an insurer's behalf.
The statutory co-payment
Even when the insurer covers a journey, those with statutory insurance usually still owe a co-payment per journey. Its amount is regulated uniformly across Germany and depends on the fare; the binding answer comes from your insurer.
Anyone exempt from co-payments pays nothing extra for patient journeys either. You apply for the exemption directly with your insurer, not with us.
Receipts: collecting pays off
You get a receipt from us for every journey, right away in the car or by email. Within Neumünster it shows exactly the amount the meter calculated under the official tariff; the full tariff table is shown on this page.
Keep the receipts, including those for co-payments made. You will need them if you submit costs to your insurer or want to apply for an exemption.
For series journeys, say to dialysis or radiotherapy, we can invoice the journeys collectively on request. That is clearer than thirty separate slips.
What we can promise and what we cannot
We can promise what is in our hands: punctual journeys, help with getting in and out, correct metered billing and clean receipts for your records.
We cannot promise that an insurer will pay. That decision rests with the insurer alone, based on the prescription. If it declines, the fare remains a private bill; which is exactly why we advise settling everything before the first journey.

Frequently asked questions
Who issues the prescription for a taxi journey?
Your treating doctor, at the practice or in hospital. The form is called Muster 4, a prescription for patient transport (Verordnung einer Krankenbeförderung). Best ask at the appointment before, so it is in place ahead of the first journey.
Does the health insurer have to approve the journey in advance?
For journeys to outpatient treatment, in many cases yes. Submit the prescription to your insurer and wait for their answer before the journeys begin. Whether approval is needed, your insurer or the practice will tell you.
How high is the co-payment for a patient journey?
The amount is set by law uniformly across Germany and depends on the fare. Your health insurer gives the binding answer; anyone exempt from co-payments pays nothing extra.

What happens if the insurer declines to pay?

Yes, right away in the car or by email if you prefer. For series journeys we can also invoice the journeys collectively, monthly for example.
