Into the taxi with a wheelchair or rollator: what works and what does not
A rollator or a folding wheelchair is everyday business for us: the driver stows it in the boot and helps you transfer onto the seat. And because not every vehicle suits every passenger, this page also says honestly when specialised medical transport is the better choice.

What comes along without any fuss
A rollator, a walking frame or a folding wheelchair fits in every one of our boots. The driver folds it, stows it and sets it up again at the destination. You do not have to lift a thing.
When booking, just note briefly in the "Note for the driver" field what is coming along. Then we send a car with enough room from the start, a large taxi if needed.
How the transfer works
With us you travel belted up on the car seat, and the wheelchair rides folded in the boot. The driver helps with the transfer: he supports you, holds the wheelchair steady and gives you time.
The only requirement is that you can manage the transfer with this help, a few steps or a supported move from wheelchair to seat. At the destination it works the same in reverse: first the wheelchair, then you, and then the driver walks you to the entrance.
To be honest: this we cannot do
A taxi has its limits, and we would rather name them beforehand than at the kerb. We cannot carry passengers lying down; that is what a patient transport ambulance is for. The same applies if you need medical care during the journey.
A powered wheelchair that does not fold will not fit into our vehicles either; it is simply too big and too heavy for a boot. And anyone who has to stay seated in their own wheelchair during the journey needs a vehicle with a ramp and wheelchair restraint, which we do not have in our fleet.
In those cases the route goes via your doctor: on the prescription he specifies which vehicle you need, and the practice knows the right providers. If in doubt, call us on 04321 22200 and we will tell you honestly on the phone whether a taxi is the right choice for you.
When the taxi is exactly right
For everyone who can travel on a normal seat with a little help, the taxi is usually the simplest solution: no special vehicle, no long lead time, one call and the car comes. To the doctor, the chiropodist, the shops or the family.
With a prescription from your doctor, such journeys can also run as patient transport, for instance to treatment at the hospital or the practice. How that works is explained on our patient transport page.
Costs and booking
Within Neumünster the official taxi tariff applies, charged by the meter. The driver's help and the stowing of your wheelchair or rollator cost nothing extra, and the pickup is free.
For destinations outside, the booking form shows you a fixed price in advance. Allow a few extra minutes for the pickup time, then the transfer stays relaxed.

Do you carry powered wheelchairs?
Only if they fold and can be loaded easily. A rigid powered wheelchair is too big and too heavy for a boot; a specialised vehicle is the right choice there. We will tell you that honestly on the phone before any car sets off.
Do you do stretcher transport?
No. Travelling lying down and medical care on the way are jobs for a patient transport ambulance. Your doctor specifies this on the prescription, and the practice arranges the right service.
Does the driver's help cost extra?
No. Getting in and out, stowing the wheelchair or rollator and walking you to the entrance are simply part of the journey for us. Within Neumünster you pay only what the meter shows under the official tariff.
